We have been working with the council since 2023 on its journey to this award and it gives us great pleasure to congratulate all the members and staff who have worked to achieve this status.

Here is an extract from the council’s official statement in April 2026:

“In March 2026, we achieved Council of Sanctuary status.

This meansย City of Sanctuary UKย recognise our commitment to being a welcoming, inclusive and safe place for everyone, including people seeking sanctuary.

Our commitment includes:

  • support for victims of domestic abuseย – working with the Cumberland Domestic and Sexual Abuse Group to make sure people affected by abuse can access the right help and protection
  • safe accommodation – working with partners to provide secure housing and ongoing support
  • inclusive services – helping people access health, education, housing and employment
  • language support – offering English lessons and informal English cafรฉs to support integration and connection
  • community engagement – supporting local events and campaigns that promote understanding, inclusion and unity

Our approach, policies and procedures support people fleeing conflict, persecution, abuse and hardship. We work with partners to build compassionate communities where everyone feels safe and can thrive.

Council of Sanctuary status does not affect the number of asylum seekers placed in Cumberland. Decisions about how many asylum seekers come to the area, and where they live, are made by the Home Office rather than the council. The status reflects how we respond when people do come here seeking sanctuary, by treating people fairly and working to make them feel welcome and safe.”

Congratulations once again and we look forward to working together as partners securing the best outcomes for people seeking sanctuary in Cumberland.
